"Not what I was dreading"

About: Gosport War Memorial Hospital

Following the adverse media coverage given to the Gosport Memorial Hospital a couple of years ago I was dreading attending a first time appointment there. Having had to attend and or stay in over ten different hospitals over the years I was certainly not a 'newbe' but I was not prepared for the experience in any way. What a surprise and what an eye-opener. I only wish that good experiences could be related to the same degree as criticism which so quickly makes the headlines. From the moment the cheery hospital appointed driver picked me up at home to the many staff who dealt happily and thoughtfully with me during their busy days it was an experience to be remembered and worthy of more than my delayed accolade. The admin staff were welcoming and helpful, the nursing staff all bright, smiling and not in the least patronising, brusque or chatting over my head about their social affairs etc. I was seen by a doctor who proceeded to give me the most thorough medical I have had since a child and made me aware of his observations which he accompanied with advice for the future. Not once did I feel a burden on the system or guilty of taking up so much time. One of the nurses even gave me a hug when I was preparing to depart and and whenever I saw one of the the orderlies/porters they responded with a smile as they went about their work . I imagine this much of this bright attitude must come from trusting team work and a happy workplace? Whatever the reason it was a visit full of surprise and delight throughout and far exceeded my expectations.
