"Compassionate care and dignity"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital

My Gran was taken in on a Friday and sadly passed away on the following Tuesday. I was totally amazed at the care and patience shown not just to her but the relatives as well. This were the person who brought the food, the person who brought drinks, the staff nurse, the porter, the consultant and the myriad of others who we saw over those days. As ever, the wonderfulness about our NHS is the people who work in it and they were fantastic. What I didn't like was on this website. When I originally searched for the hospital to be able to find the location and a site map, the first thing I was presented with was the mortality rates! I remember when the point of this public facing website was to 'destress' the journey through the NHS for patients and their visitors. To give them the information they needed to make a very stressful time in their lives as easy as possible. Seeing bad mortality rates when your family member is already admitted is not helpful! Mortality rates are great for patients choice but not on the main page when you search for a hospital please.

Dear Judy

Thank you for sharing both you and your grandmothers experience of care and treatment provided by Blackpool Victoria Hospital. I would like to offer my sincere condolences on the loss of your grandmother, I can appreciate how upsetting and traumatic this event must have been for you and your family and I'm glad our team supported you all so well. I will ensure your comment is passed onto those involved.

I understand it must have been upsetting to see our mortality figures on the NHS Choices website, these are published openly as part of the NHS transparency agenda so members of the public have can make informed choices about their health care and compare the different providers.

I'd like to reassure you that our mortality figures are affected by a number of factors including age, place of death, deprivation and the data collection systems from patient records. Over the past 12 months a significant amount of work has taken place across the Trust to address concerns regarding mortality figures. This has been led by the Chief Executive and driven by the Mortality Board which includes senior clinicians from all specialities in the Trust as well as GP representatives and a Consultant from Public Health. Since the commencement of this work our mortality rates have fallen considerably and our figures are now close to the national average.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to get in contact with a member of our team on 01253 655588.

Kind regards

Paul Jebb
