"We forgot!"

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

Having been through cancer surgery at this hospital back in January (I have had to postpone my complaint concerning that visit as the complaints team cannot get me records long enough as they are being used for ongoing treatment) I find myself having to write yet another bad review. I was due to have Radioactive Iodine treatment today but it was cancelled at the last moment because someone forgot to order the medication. You would think it bad enough that having survived Cancer you then have to make all the arrangements yourself! My oncologist made the appointment a couple of weeks prior at a consultation. I have still to receive any paperwork confirming my appointment for today. After several phone calls I got confirmation that I was booked in for this treatment. 3 days ago I get a phone call explaining where and when I need to be on the ward (all was looking good). Later the same day I get a call from the young man who would be administering the radioactive iodine to run through a risk assessment. (Things looking good still). Told to ring at 10am this morning - all still ok, someone would ring back later to confirm what time I need to go in. Get a phone call - We are really sorry but have to cancel because we forgot to order the medication. The earliest we can re-book you for is next Wednesday. 5 More days to wait! None of this sounds too bad until you realize that I have not been able to take my life saving thyroxine medication now for 2 weeks and I now need to go another 5 days! I had a total tyroidectomy. Life is great when you are trying to hold down a job and can't keep your eyes open, sleep for 16 hours a day and are now having muscle spasms. Maybe it was up to me to check that the iodine had been ordered as well. There is a good success rate for surviving cancer (especially thyroid). It's surviving the Royal Sussex Count Hospital that is the problem.
