"Excellent support at a stressful time"

About: Royal Free Hospital

I visited A&E after the periodic recurrence of a long-term medical problem, which has very distressing symptoms in acute cases like yesterday. The receptionist was friendly and efficient. My wait time was approximately 40 mins before seeing an A&E consultant. The consultant was knowledgeable, explored options with me and explained which option was preferable at that point. I was prescribed the textbook medication for this condition, which unfortunately worsened things throughout the afternoon. I don't believe this was indicative of a poor decision, merely that it was unforeseen that my body couldn't cope with the drug at the time. I returned to A&E about six hours later feeling very ill and within approximately 30 minutes was referred to one of the doctors in the Urgent Care Centre. This doctor seemed to know more about my condition than anyone else I've encountered over the past twenty years, including specialist consultants. She validated the prior medication decision, but suggested that a second, parallel drug was also needed in my case. She gave me an immediate dose as well as a further prescription, and insisted that I wait for her to review me again 20 minutes later, after she had seen another patient. Not having eaten for three days, the drug's effects seemed very rapid and I felt significantly better by that point. She instigated follow-up appointments in order to ensure a more long-term review of my condition. By the time I got home, I felt better than I had done all week. This afternoon, someone from the hospital phoned to survey my experience at the hospital. Needless to say, I feel that I received an excellent standard of care and was very happy to explain this. (In fact, I was already starting to write this review when I received the call.)
