"Gallbladder removal"

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital

I arrived at the Day Surgery at 6.50, I was one of the first patients to be called. Was told to say goodbye to my husband, as relatives could not accompany you. I was taken to a room and a nurse weighed me, took my BP and asked me to get undressed and place hospital gown on that was given to me. You then lock your items away in a locker and give the key to a nurse outside the room. I was then told to wait to meet the surgeon and anethesitist. firstly the surgeon doctor arrived a went through various forms. Shortly after the anethesitist arrived and spoke to me and asked if I had any questions. Then my consultant briefly spoke to me. i waited and about 8.45 am I wa asked to go with a nurse, she took me into the threate where I was prepared for my operation. After the op I was woken up in recovery and asked I would like water, which I accepted. a few minutes later hot toast and coffee arrived, I struggled to eat this as I felt so tired and kept going to sleep. Once I finished my bag was brought to me a and I was asked to get dressed and said I could ask for help if I needed it. I got dressed and then taken to another area, I asked do a coffee and biscuits as I could see other people had these. I was then told I needed to have a wee, once I had I could go home. I did eventually do this, and again taken to another area, where a nurse opened a door and asked for my husband to come in, which he duly did. I was constantly falling asleep. We were taken by a nurse to a room where my husband was given my medication and discharge instructions. It was suggested by the nurse that we have a porter take me by wheelchair to our car, there wasnt a way i could see myself walking. My overall satisfaction of the care was good, the staff were caring, polite and cheerful. My only criticism was feeling I was on a 'conveyor belt' something I have never experienced before.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed explanation of your time in the Day Surgery Unit. I am pleased that you found staff to be caring, polite and cheerful - please be assured that I will of course pass your kind comments on to the staff in the Day Surgery Unit. I was sorry to learn that you were made to feel as if you were on a "conveyor belt" as this is most certainly not the impression our staff like to give our patient's. Your comment will also be passed on to the department to ensure that learning takes place from this.
