"Apparent disinterest towards dementia patient with broken femur"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

Experience in A & E at Wishaw General Hospital. My elderly mother was admitted to A & E. She has dementia and was left lying on a bed screaming for 5 hours before being xrayed and they discovered she had a severely broken right femur. She was unable to say that she was in pain but the continuous screaming should have indicated something was not right.

We asked for pain relief for hours and she was eventually given morphine at 10pm - 8 hours after being admitted. She is incontinent and I had to ask twice for her pad to be changed. I am shocked and upset at the length of time my mum lay in bed and unhelpful attitude of the staff we met when requesting her pad to be changed.

I found that staff we encountered seemed to be disinterested and it certainly did not feel like patient centred care.

Dear charliemck

I was truly upset to read your posting and I cannot begin to imagine how your mum must have suffered and the impact this would have on you and your family. I am so sorry. Gillian Corbett is the chief nurse for Wishaw and I know she will want to speak to you if you to feel able. This would allow us to discuss with staff. The senior charge nurse in this area

Tracey Dodd is very passionate about patient care and I know she will also want to find out more.

Gillian is contactable via the main hospital switchboard. Can you please contact her?

In the meantime I hope that your mum is recovering from this trauma.

Kind regards

Rosemary

Update posted by Charliemck (a relative)

I don't want to meet with anyone as it won't change what has happened to my Mum. Thankfully she is now pain free and is receiving "conservative" nursing on her broken leg. Hopefully she will be going back to care home in next day or two.
