Having heard adverse publicity concerning Medway Maritime Hospital's A&E Department in the media , it was not without some degree of trepidation that I attended there with a pain in my right calf, after recently undergoing surgery (not at Medway) on my foot. Although the ambiance of the Department is not inviting the greeting I received from the receptionist was reassuring and helpful. I was quickly seen by the triage nurse, who was highly professional (this must surely be one of the most difficult but important jobs in the hospital!) and she quickly referred me to the specialist DVT service operated by Medway Doctors on Call. Again I was seen quickly by a doctor there who methodically followed what I perceived to be a well-trodden diagnostic and treatment pathway. Although the initial blood test proved inconclusive he administered a prophylactic until he could arrange a scan and a further blood test. The scan and blood test took place the next day and a DVT in the short segment of one of the peroneal vein of my right calf was found - which was the leg on which I had been operated on. Straightaway I was sent back to Medway Doctors on Call and an excellent nurse specialist set in train the treatment I was to receive. Well done Medway Maritime Hospital and Medway Doctors on Call.
"DVT service excellent"
