"Eye department"

About: North Devon District Hospital

I have been visiting the Eye Clinic for the past few years. The reception staff are brilliant. Always helpful, cheerful and pleasant. The nurses doing the eye checks are quick and efficient. The doctors thorough and take the time to explain what is happening and the different options open to me. I have a few suggestions for improvement which are to do with the facilities: 1) it can be incredibly busy in the clinic with lots of movement as people go from sight test to clinic room etc, a bit disorientating for those with poor sight. Maybe more space with the rooms laid out in a more ergonomic fashion for patient flow 2) f your sight is not so good, and your hearing going at the same time, it may not be easy to know when it is your turn! Perhaps a TV screen with the name of the patient on at the same time as announcing? 3) the out-patient department definitely looks in need of a facelift as it doesnt seem to have been touched since the 70's compared to some really nice areas elsewhere. But the staff are what make it lovely.

Dear Julian

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on the website, its always useful to recieve patient feedback, to help us make improvements where needed.

I have forwarded your comments on to the service manager, and asked her to let me know of any future changes that may already be in the pipeline, as I am aware there are plans afoot to make some changes in the department, in the not too distant future.

I am sure she will be very grateful for your feedback, and I hope to be able to get back to you soon with her comments.

Jayne

Dear Julian

Following my response yesterday I have now spoken with the Service Manager for the Opthalmology Department who given me the following information regarding the eye clinic which I hope you find useful:

"We do recognise that the eye clinic is an extremely busy area and we are delighted with your comments about the staff. We have recently replaced the flooring which has made a difference. We also obtained a quote for refurbishing the area, which would be subject to capital funding as it is a considerable amount of money. If this were to be approved at some stage in the future (no plans yet) one of our biggest challenges would be where to rehouse the department whilst works were undertaken (if approved) as we have also been quoted 10 weeks minimum for the build time and currently there is nowhere to temporary rehouse".

Once again many thanks for your feedback.

Kind regards

Jayne
