"Doctor and receptionist were very good."

About: North Manchester General Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Doctor and receptionist were very good.

What could be improved

Traffic around 9 o'clock was terrible getting to the hospital. Parking was atrocious, and very expensive. Loads of potholes and unsurfaced areas too. Map on website was out of date and unclear.

Whilst trying for ages to find somewhere to park, half of the site looked derelict.

Anything else?

Dozens of smokers, both staff and patients, at the front of the hospital and at the quadrangle entrance. No staff doing anything about it.

Canteen was not nice. Staff all looked fed up.

We're glad to hear that you were happy with your care, and sorry to hear about the other issues.

Our carparking costs are either cheaper or comparable with other Greater Manchester hospitals - they start at £1.70 for up to four hours, and rise to £5 for a 24-hour period.

We are currently building our new £30 million women and children's unit at the hospital, so there is greater pressure on the car parks than normal. Many are on hard surfaces, but some areas are on gravel. There are old buildings on the NMGH site - these are the old workhouses. While one is used for admin staff, the others are sealed. We are currently working on a plan to redevelop the whole hospital, but it is early days yet.

The website maps are out of date - other postings have made this point. We've recently revamped our website, so we are doing these up, as we're now getting more visitors/patients seeking online info before a visit.

Smoking is certainly an issue for us, and for other hospitals - we have a policy saying that visitors/patients should not smoke, but the law sadly does not cover our grounds, only our buildings, so enforcement is difficult. Staff are not allowed to smoke while on duty.

The canteen has just opened up its new cafe section which has proved very popular, and the catering team are very proud of the themed menus they do.
