I recently had a knee revision operation. The ward I was on was extremely understaffed. One evening there was just one member of staff for 25 patients. On the day of my surgery after returning to the ward my wound had bled considerably both the dressing and bed was covered in blood. Whilst a nurse was redressing my wound she was reprimanded in front of me for doing so by a senior nurse. I had no problems using a bed pan for passing urine but over 24 hours after surgery I asked to be wheeled to the toilets so that I could open my bowels and I was told no. Pain relief at this time was pretty much none existent mainly due to shortage of staff. It is very important for regular pain relief to stay on top of any pain. One patients mother actually rang the ward to ask someone to give her daughter something. If I could of I would of run out of the hospital as it was on my discharge I had to walk from ward 9 to the reception. Not a very comfortable experience at all
