"1st Class Care by all"

About: Torbay Hospital

From the moment I walked into A&E I felt at ease due to the helpful, caring and professional nature of the admin team, Assessment nurse, Nursing team and the Doctors/Consultants. I was diagnosed with peritonitis ( A Ruptured appendix). I think from the time I walked into A&E to the time I was taken down for emergency surgery it was less than 3 hours! I was kept informed of what was happening and how I'd feel post op. My next experience was waking up in the recovery unit, where again I was given exceptional care by the nurse allocated to me. My pain was managed, I was constantly re-assured and kept informed. I was then taken to Forrest ward at about 2am, On arrival I was greeted by the sister/nurse in charge (Dark blue uniform). She explained where I was and what was going to happen next and that if I needed anything at all to press my call button. I spent the next three days on Forrest ward where I was very poorly indeed. Following a second CT Scan it was found I had a strangulated hernia which explained my constant vomiting! I was rushed back down to theatre for a second op. Again I woke in recovery to exceptional care (coincidently it was the same nurse again looking after me ) I stayed in recovery for the next 6 to 8 hours, because I now had a catheter and NG tube fitted I was able to take small sips of water ( The first time in 5 days) The recovery nurse made sure I had iced water and help me drink it through a straw it was like the best most expensive champagne you can imagine it was just heavenly!! Back to forest ward that night where I was then able to really started my recovery. I was visited every 4 hours by a high dependency nurse night and day who helped me mange my pain and reassured me at every step. I was also visited by the doctors and consultants every morning. The nurses washed, shaved and even helped me go to the toilet while keeping my dignity fully intact. They talked to me every day keeping my spirits up as best they could. On my final day (12th day) In hospital I had a visit from just about every doctor and consultant I'd seen while I was in hospital, there must have been a dozen or more came to see me and wish me luck, I even had a visit from the recovery nurse that day wishing me well. The last day on the ward was extremely emotional for me as although I was ecstatic about being able to go home I had to say goodbye to this amazing team of people who saved my life! Words are not enough to express my gratitude to everyone who cared for me so well while I was in hospital. From the bottom of my heart Thank You Ps I forgot to mention the always cheerful porters! Keep up the good work guys! A very relieved to be here father of four from Teignmouth
