"Concern about my family member"

About: Whitchurch Community Psychiatric Department

(as the patient),

I recently went to visit a family member, who has been sectioned to Whitchurch hospital. He is on a locked ward with about ten other people.

I was very shocked and dismayed when I asked him how he spent his day, and was told that basically he was free to get up at anytime he wished, and spend his time on the ward as he pleased eg playing computer games, watching tv or playing pool.

I asked him if he had to do anything or if he had any educational programmes upcoming, he replied no. I spoke to a nurse who was present who informed me that she had been nursing for twenty years and in previous times people were made to do jobs, workshops etc. However in today's day and age a choice is given asking people if they want to do workshops, jobs etc.

However I fail to see where the choice is, when she then informed me that no facilities were provided. I feel very upset about this as I feel my family member, who is only young, is not being given the help and support he needs in this trying time, and the help he needs to prepare himself for the outside world.
