"The ride to the hospital was the smoothest, best route "

About: Frenchay Hospital / Accident and emergency South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as a relative),

A few days before Christmas I had to call 999 for an ambulance for my husband, he’s under treatment at the St Peter’s Hospice but was at home at this time.

Within 5 minutes I had someone from the fire brigade (! ) followed within minutes by an ambulance from Yate.

The paramedic, Tracy Hart, was excellent. I could not get over how well she and the driver Tim treated my husband. These two young people were so caring.

After examining my husband the decision was to take him to Frenchay hospital. The ride to the hospital was the smoothest, best route that Tim could take. He made sure my husband did not experience any more discomfort than he was already suffering - this was so thoughtful.

Just one other point I’d like to make – I had to have an ambulance out last November when the driver explained they used a sat-nav to get them around. The sat-nav takes a very winding route through all the villages but on this occasion in December the route to the hospital was via the Powerstation Road which is more straightforward. Tim took this route because he knew the area. Could all the ambulances use this route?

Hi FarEast353

Thank you for taking the time to share your story.

Our service have several Community First Responders that work in various communities to help provide care and first aid to patients in the minutes between a 999 call being made and an ambulance crew arriving on scene. It would appear that, on this occasion, your husband received a visit from one of our Fire Co-Responders (who are just like our Community First Responders) before the ambulance crew arrived.

Our ambulance crews will always use their local knowledge to find their way to any address. However, if an ambulance crew is working in an unfamiliar area they will use their the onboard satellite navigation system to locate an address or guide them to hospital. On the occasion you mention in November, I would think that the ambulance crew you encountered might have been less familiar with the area so had to rely on the satellite navigation unit to direct them.

It is very rewarding to hear how our staff are continuing to provide excellent care to patients. I would like to pass on your thanks directly to Tracy and Tim, but in order to do so I will need some more information. May I ask you to contact me on either sara.coburn@swast.nhs.uk or 01392 261 552 at your convenience?

Thank you, again, for taking the time to provide us with feedback.

Sara
