About: Darent Valley Hospital

I was admitted for a full hysterectomy on 3rd February 2014. The pre op procedure was slick and calm although I did end up waiting an hour on a trolley before going in to anaesthetics. Luckily I was quite calm about the procedure but I think a more nervous patient would have found this difficult. I awoke in recovery where I remained for 7.5 hours. My care there was good although I was only offered a cup of tea and soggy toast which, because I ended up going to the ward late, was all the food I was offered all day. My stay on mulberry ward was good.. The staff were excellent. My only compliant was that the catering staff ran out of food options on several occasions which meant that I missed meals. Since I only stayed three days this was ok but in a more sick patient it would be unacceptable. I was encouraged to leave earlier than had been planned which I appreciate was due to the skills of the surgeon and my good recovery but my 81 year old carer was put under pressure. Various promises about helping me out of the hospital were made but sadly not met. The porter arrived early which resulted in me missing another meal, I was left in the main entrance for 15 minutes instead of being helped to my cab as promised and when my mother arrived she couldn't find me. I felt like my departure to free up another bed was more important than my care in getting home safely. That having been said........ Although this sounds like a moan I don't wish it to be. Hopefully it gives some points to consider. I appreciate my care and how the demands for beds puts pressure on a service which otherwise would be excellent. I would happily come to Darenth Valley Hospital again as I think the essential elements are great. I would like to thank the staff for their help in making my experience overall a positive one..

Dear Ms Salt Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent experience with us at the hospital. We were delighted to hear that you received a good continuity of care and that you would happily come back to Darent Valley Hospital if required. Although we were sorry to read that there were a few minor issues whilst you were a patient with us, especially regarding the food and your discharge and for this please accept our apologies. It is very important to us that we receive feedback as it enables the sharing of best practices across the hospital. This in turn, ensures that staff are aware of all aspects of a patients journey and thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. We wish you a speeding recovery post surgery. Best wishes The Communication Team Darent Valley Hospital
