"Lack of care at Wigan Infirmary"

About: Royal Albert Edward Infirmary / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

My Granddad was admitted to Wigan Infirmary, my parents were away on holiday, i was at work, so my sister went to stay with him until i could finish work and come and visit. When i arrived my Granddad had been sat on the medical admissions unit (MAU) for at least 6 hours. No one except a student nurse had been over to introduce themselves. I thought this was appalling.

I'm a nurse myself and while i recognise MAU is an extremely busy department i would expect at least the nurse on each shift to introduce herself/himself to the patient. When i went over to inquire after my Granddad nurses were in handover and they told me they would come and give me an update later, this never happened.

Another hour went by. i was about to go up again when the on call registrar came to see my granddad, i found out his GP had referred him with a possible pulmonary embolism (which can be life threatening) and yet he had sat around all day with no test to rule this out, and an x-ray that had been 'lost'. Luckily for my granddad he did not have a pulmonary embolism, he had a severe chest infection and was moved to the appropriate ward and was treated.

I was appalled by the lack of care by nurses and health care support workers.
