"the treatment "

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I am an international student. I had an accident and I broke my wrist, I went to the hospital and doctors said I that I needed to have an operation. After operation, the care management came to visit me and asked me for my passport and visa. I said to them, I initially came to the UK on a 6.5 month visa and it expired. I reapplied for visa via the university so I did have it. She said once you receive it, send it to us.

Before the accident I received a copy of biometric letter to give fingerprints at a participating post office. However, my name was not spelled correctly on my biometric letter. Therefore, I had to return it to the university to take correct one and I received a new letter to give fingerprints. Therefore, I received the visa and passport. When I got it, I sent my documents to the hospital but they did not accept my visa. She said when you came the hospital on specific date, your visa came in another date. in other words, the coming of your visa did not cover your arrival to hospital. So, you need to pay for your treatment, which is £333.

All of these are not my fault. Before accident, I have already been full time student at University of Leicester. According to the law, if you are university student, you don't need to pay the invoice. I can't afford paying this, but I don't know what to do. It is very hard for overseas students to live in the UK.

Dear Shu,

I’m very sorry for any distress this issue may have caused you, and would like to help you clarify your rights and whether you should indeed be paying for your own treatment.

In order to do so, I will need some more specific information from you. If you can please send your full name, DOB, current UK residence and date(s) of your hospital treatment to Karen.Faver@uhl-tr.nhs.uk and I will look into this for you as soon as possible.

Kind regards

Karen Faver
