I have recently had to go to a and e at lister as I was suffering from terrible pain in my groin area. the a and e department were amazing and although I was kept there for 13 hours they were caring and sympathetic and dealt with my care efficiently. I was moved to 5bnorth 13 hours later where I saw a Consultant, he speculated that he thought the pain was a hernia in my groin and he would request a ultrasound scan and hip x-ray to cover all bases. I never got the scan that day and was moved to 8bn the following day. when they phoned radiology later that day they were told by radiology that 5bn had told them I had been discharged and so had cancelled the scan and x-ray. it then took them 2 more days to finally get the scan and x-ray, all the time I was just consistently filled up on morphine and codeine and paracetemol to deal with the pain. I was informed by radiology that they had seen enlarged lymph glands and suggested they were the cause for the pain, and were going to recommend to the Consultant to find the cause of the enlarged lymph glands and that would solve the pain. I was also reviewed by the orthopaedic consultant who had been able to rule out the hip was the problem and agreed with the radiologist and said she could feel the enlarged lymph glands. I wasn't reviewed over the weekend at all and left on the concoction of pain relief. which didn't touch the pain at all. on the Monday I was seen by the Consultant's registrar and he said my lymph glands were normal size? and he wanted to do a CT scan, It took till Wednesday to get done. once done I was reviewed approximately an hour later and the the Consultant's registrar who said to me "your scans are all normal, you must be pleased" I replied "so why am I in pain, and what happens about the pain now" he replied " we don't know why your in pain, but you just need to go home and learn to, live with the pain!". He was unsympathetic and had no empathy for me at all. I approached one of the junior doctors in his team and she was even less sympathetic, she was texting on her mobile as I approached and she never looked up at me from it, she continued texting whilst talking to me and then eventually she looked up with a very sarcastic face and told me to go see my gp. I have come home in agony, and I was even told by several of the nurses that they felt I had been treat disgracefully, one nurse even quoted " at times like these I wish I worked in Tesco's" she also recommended that I should return to a and e and start the process again as it would go down on the Consultant's and his teams records that they had a failed discharge.It is my belief that because the Consultant and his team couldn't find a quick answer to my pain they just wanted to get rid of me, and then they don't have to think of me again. I have not returned to the hospital because I feel I could not cope mentally with being treat like that again, even recommendations made by the pain nurse were never put in place by the team even though they had been agreed.

Whilst pleased to see that you rated the Lister's emergency team so highly, we were very disappointed to hear about your concerns about the care received whilst an inpatient. From talking to colleagues, we're aware that one of our PALS team did meet up with you when you were in hospital, but was under the impression that everything had been sorted for you. Clearly this did not turn out to be the case and whilst we know that the PALS team member will have encouraged you to get in touch again if you needed to, maybe you did not feel able to do that again? Whatever the reason, we would welcome you getting contacting us again - just email generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net - so that we can have all of these issues investigated formally for you. We hope that you give us that chance.
