"Basic hygiene"

About: Fairfield General Hospital

(as a relative),

What could be improved

Basic hygiene

Anything else?

After recovering from an operation my nan in law was being sick. We asked the nursing staff for tissues and were told Sorry we don't supply tissues. So we asked for toilet roll. Again we were told Sorry we don't supply toilet roll. When we asked what we could do, the nurse just shrugged her shoulders.

Also when she was first admitted she was unable to move due to a broken hip. We arrived for visiting and the call button was in its holder on the wall. If it hadn't been for a younger patient in the bed opposite keeping an eye out for her I dread to think how she would have attracted staff attention.

We also observed blood samples left on the nursing station for over an hour. Now when we go to the surgery for blood tests they get sent off quickly and are kept refrigerated. I wonder how reliable the results were after sitting in the ward heat for so long ?

We're very sorry to hear about your nan-in-law's experience. If you want us to look into this further then please contact our Patient Advice team via our website: www.pat.nhs.uk

We take hygiene very seriously, and the hard work of ward staff has helped us substantially reduce the MRSA rate at our hospitals. This has included additional handwashing training for 4,500 staff, a £500,000 invesment in infection prevention sisters and skin preparation solution. We are certainly not complacent and realise that patients and their families expect high levels of hygiene in our hosptials, so our efforts will continue.
