"problems using the machines"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I went to the ophthalmology department at Crosshouse Hospital for a field of vision test but I had problems using the machine. I think you have more chance of winning the lottery than being comfortable on those machines.

I have a condition that causes muscle weakness and I found it really difficult to try and use the machine. Stress builds up because you can’t do the exercise properly and I was not going to just try and do it and hope for the best because they might not have got an accurate reading.

The seat is adjusted by an assistant but it would make more sense for the patient to be able to adjust the seat into a comfortable position and for the chin rest to be available in different sizes/shapes. The machine is also jammed in the corner, which means there is not a lot of room.

I wasn't able to complete the test yesterday because of the issues around the machine and I now have to go down again in two weeks to try again and will have to explain my problems to a different member of staff. It is causing me some worry.

The doctor I saw was very professional and I want to stress I am not criticising the doctors manner at all and I didn't get angry about the situation but I don’t think I can go through the situation again if I can’t use the machine.

Dear Rocket419

Thank you for getting in touch with us through Patient Opinion.

What a stressful time you had at your field of vision test appointment, I can appreciate why this would not have been an enjoyable experience for you. I also understand why you are anxious about returning to repeat the test in 2 weeks.

I have forwarded your posting onto our Healthcare Manager that covers opthalmology at University Hospital Crosshouse to see how we can alleviate your anxiety at your next appointment.

Kind regards

Kate

I have pleasure in posting an update from our Health Care Manager, Karen Andrews, who covers our Ophthalmology Department at Univeristy Hospital Crosshouse:

Dear Rocket419

I was sorry to hear about your experience at University Hospital Crosshouse when you attended for your field test. I have noted your anxiety about returning in 2 weeks and would like to advise that we will do our best to ensure you have a better experience at your next visit. I am working with the clinical team to look at ways of improving this for you. If you could telephone to provide your name, address and appointment time this would be very helpful.
