"Arrival Information for Out-Patients"

About: North Manchester General Hospital

I was given an appointment (appt) to attend the Pain Clinic in Out-Patients G at NMGH and attendance information was provided by post and by use of a form WRD730 13/05/2011. (.....which would suggest this printing of this form has been in use for almost three years!) The form is an appts record card and contains information about the clinic and consultant, patient data and appt date/time..... and also a "map" of the hospital layout (old building) showing where Outpatients G can be found.. As hospital "friends" will know, such a "map" is very useful for visitors considering the size of the hospital. The "map" shows clearly that Outpatients G is at the southern end of the building, annexed to B Block. I found this very helpful as it meant I would be able to park quite near to the rear entrance to the building and I would be "there". As it happened I couldn't find a parking space there so eventually Blue-Badge parked in the "Quad", from where I walked half the length of the old building to Block B, where there weren't any signs for Outpatients G. So I asked a member of staff and was told that Outpatients G was in fact at the other end of the building, on the right side. Looking at the "map" on the card it became clear that the diagram was in reality printed upside-down, at least, as far as my destination was concerned. Having mobility impairment I was now getting quite tired; without encouragement from my carer I would have found it quite difficult to get beyond the "Quad" entrance on my trip to the other end of the place! When we found the correct ward entrance for Out-Patients G and checked in, I mentioned to the registrar that the map was wrong and she said that "they won't print any more until the old ones are all used up"! It's horrific! Maybe they can'f afford to print new cards until the old ones are used, but surely someone could strike the map through with a marker pen, or include a slip of paper which says "map is wrong!" In fact, I would happily volunteer as a "Friend of Crumpsall" to do the striking through....just send me the boxes of cards and I'll do them for you in a couple of days; and I'll even pay for the marker pen myself!
