"Reception staff acknowledged us ..."

About: Lister Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

Reception staff acknowledged us as soon as we arrived, were sympathetic and dealt with us quickly.

My son was patient. The Children's dept were absolutely fantastic, They dealt with us as soon as we walked in. Explained situation to us clearly and kindly. Gave treatment swiftly and carefully. Thank you so much to the staff there.

What could be improved

We were told our son needed to have an X ray but not informed where to go etc. Our common sense told us to make our way to the X ray dept which was correct but we weren't sure if children went to same location etc.

Anything else?

Not much seating outside the gated area (for children to play) and it got a bit crowded near door with child patients in wheelchairs with leg injuries.

Response from Lister Hospital

Thanks for your comments, which have now been passed onto our children’s services team.

We are sorry that you were not told how to get to the x-ray department - in fact it's highly unusual that this did not happen. But on the rare occasions when one of our staff forgets, we always encourage patients to ask if they are unsure of how to get to a department in one our hospitals.

As for the children's A&E, sadly there will be occasions when it becomes very busy - which is very hard to predict. The whole department is going through an upgrade that will see it offering not just a 24-hour dedicated children's A&E, but also a 24-hour children's assessment unit for those who may need to be observed for a period of time prior to being discharged home or admitted for further care. Once opened from mid-October 2008, this will ease the space pressures on the children's A&E at the Lister.
