"excelleny treatment by A&E for a rare condition"

About: Darent Valley Hospital

I have a rare condition called Addisons Disease.   Normally my condition is controlled by oral steroids and I live a full and healthy life.  However, I do have occasional crises which demand hospital care of a very precise and urgent nature.  As the condition is very rare, it's not unknown for A&E staff to be at a loss as to how to treat me which presents a seriosuly life threatening situation for me.  On Tuesday 7th January I went into an Addisons Crisis following a bout of severe vomiting.  My husband administered an emergency steroid injection but on the advice of my consultant at Queen Mary's, we made our way to Darent Valley A&E.  My husband was very concerned about how I would be treated and was armed with information from the ADSHG, a charity working to raise awareness of the condition.   However, the triage nurse was excellent and whether or not she had previous experience of Addisons or could see how poorly I was, she fast tracked me through to the treamtent area.  There the care continued to be exemplary - the nursing staff and consultant took every care to ensure that I was treated very quickly.   I was admitted to the CDU ward where the consultant continued to provide excellent care and attention to me.
