"A & E for 2 weeks and then admitted"

About: Whiston Hospital

On Friday 13th December I attended the Review Clinic in A & E for the wound on my leg to be redressed. Fortunately for me the doctor recognised that the wound was so badly infected that I needed to be seen by an orthopaedic doctor and also a plastics surgeon. As you can imagine this was not what I had planned prior to Christmas. After consultation with both of the aforementioned it was decided that I would need to be admitted in order that the infection could be addressed urgently. Also that the wound would need cleaning and debridement under general anaesthetic. This was performed on Sunday 15th December and I remained in Ward 3c until Wednesday 18th December. It was hoped on the 18th that the wound would be ready to accept a skin graft, but it was not. I was discharged and told to come back on Friday 27th December for further surgery and hopefully to perform the skin graft. I did go in on the 27th to ward 3A and was operated upon that afternoon. On Sunday 29th the plastic surgery team examined my leg and were happy that the graft was well on its way to be accepted. I was subsequently discharged with an outpatient appointment for the 6th January. Which I attended and have further outpatient appoiintments arranged. I have posted my comments about the A & E department previously and felt that I definitely needed to post my comments upon the experience of being an inpatient. From the moment I arrived on both wards to the moment I left my care by the staff was second to none. If I had been paying £1,000. per day I could not have experienced better treatment both medically, surgically and by the nursing and support staff. Thank you Whiston I believe that with your care and concern you saved my leg for which I will be eternally grateful. Once again Well Done to everyone concerned throughout all of my visits I have been treated with dignity and respect. I also feel I received the best treatment possible. MY only adverse comment and it is not of the hospital itself but the cost of using the Televison, Telephone and internet. This was very expensive and not always the best of service. Anyone ringing in to my room was charged at a premium rate of around £4. per call (this was definitely far too much) Mobile phone callers were told they could not be connected to my mobile and were advised to use the telephone number allotted to the bed I was in. This does need a rethink! .
