"gallstone pain/consultation"

About: Doncaster Royal Infirmary

I went to DRI with a bad gallstone attack about 2 years ago, then not long after my gp referred me back and was diagnosed with gallstones. 3 weeks later i saw a consultant there after being examined etc he said for me to have surgery i needed to lose weight and gave me another appointment and that was it. No help with diet, no explaining why, nothing, well i couldn't see him at next appointment due to struggling loosing weight. 2 years later and I'm still suffering. I have seen/heard of people being over 35 stone and having surgery for gastric bands etc yet I'm 16.12 in not allowed surgery so have to suffer. Would not recommend this hospital to anyone

First of all, please accept our apologies if there was more we could have done to explain our reasons for not performing surgery at your weight or to help you access support with losing weight. We are also sorry to hear that you are still having problems two years later and would like to invite you to come and see us again so we can see how we can help you. One of our consultant surgeons who specialises in weight loss as well as general surgery has said he would be happy to see you. Without knowing your full clinical background, we can't comment specifically on the reasons your surgeon did not feel it was appropriate to perform surgery at that time and advised you to lose weight first. It’s worth explaining, though, that conditions vary so it may be appropriate to perform one kind of procedure on someone at their current weight but not appropriate to perform a different procedure. Sometimes it is also important for patients to make lifestyle changes - like losing weight - in order for surgery to be successful. As you are still experiencing problems it is important that you see someone again. We would be very happy to meet with you if you contact our Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on 0800 028 8059 or pals.dbh@dbh.nhs.uk and let them know that the General Surgery CSU team asked you to get in touch. Once again, we are sorry that you haven't been happy with the care you received two years ago but we would very much welcome the opportunity to put this right. Best wishes, General Surgery CSU
