"X-Ray"

About: Victoria Hospital (Deal) / Respiratory medicine

(as the patient),

I would like to know why it is necessary to wait 7-10 days for the results of a chest x-ray. I was referred to my local hospital last week for an x-ray after seeing my GP about a lump I have developed over my ribcage. I appreciate that the x-ray needs to be assessed by the appropriate senior clinician but I do not understand why takes up to 10 days for the findings to reach my GP.

I am the mother of a toddler and a nine month old baby; my mother, boyfriend and mother-in-law have all had cancer. I also suffer from anxiety and I am finding this period of waiting a very stressful and nerve wracking experience.

I recently spent 18 months living in Germany, there a clinician would be on hand to interpret the results immediately - surely in the long run this less bureaucratic approach would actually reduce administration costs and save money?

Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry that you have experienced a delay. The results of any x-rays are sent directly back to the GP that referred you for the test and normally these would be received within 5 days. Please do email me your details and I will ensure that the radiology department checks that your GP practice has received your results. My email address is Julie.pearce1@nhs.net

Your suggestion about having radiologists to report on tests whilst you are there is the ideal service. Unfortunately we would not have enough radiologists to run this approach across all of the types of radiology tests we run - we manage around 1500 tests radiology per day.
