My husband was admitted last Friday 5th Jan to Derriford for a Quadruple heart bypass after being transferred from Treliske hospital. They finally did the operation on Tuesday 9th January. The night before at 8 pm he was made to get out of his bed and had to sit in the day room for at least two and a half hours while they found him another space for his bed as an emergency needed his room. After the operation he was put on Torrington ward and I cannot praise the staff there enough. He was then transferred to Clearbrook ward where things took a sharp decline in aftercare. He was made to sit in a chair from 9 am until 3.30 pm. Despite asking repeatedly for a pillow to support his head so that he could try to sleep a bit more comfortably in the chair nobody tried to find one. At 1130 am he asked to be put back in his bed as he really wanted to sleep but was told that there was no one available to help him, despite being in tears. I found the staff very unwilling to help, when he pressed the bedside buzzer it took 10 minutes for the staff to come to him, but amazingly when they did finally move him into his bed they found some pillows for him. He had asked for his personal belongings to be returned to him, this took 4 hours. If this is the way that hospitals are run it is a poor state of affairs. When I went into the day room one man had been sitting in there for 8 hours waiting for a bed and there were others beside him waiting.
