"the registrars know my daughter best but were overruled "

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was born five weeks prematurely with a congenital heart defect. She also suffers from bad reflux and cows milk allergy.

She has been admitted to the paediatric unit a couple of times with poor feeding and weight loss.

I can not fault any of the nurses, the care and support they give both my daughter and I is second to none.

The registrars that know my daughter are excellent and very fast acting and always err on the side if caution. But I feel this is not it the case for the consultants I have come into contact with.

I took my daughter to the gp as she was poor feeding and had a bad cold. While at the gp her SATs kept dropping and she was having episodes of blueness! ! So she was rushed to cross house via ambulance and with the help of some oxygen she picked up again. When we arrived at a&e we were taken upto the ward as they were expecting us. Her o2 levels were measured where they were only 91% no more oxygen given. She is only 4 months old. She was tested for RSV which was negative but once that came back fine all breathing problems were brushed aside and they only focused in the feeding issue. The decision was made by the registrar to put an ng tube in to help feed. We were then admitted.

The next morning a consultant insisted that ng tube came out and oral feeds should be given with nasal suction to help breathing. She had another 5\6 episode's of blue which I was told was reflux even though her sats were 94 and she's on anti reflux medication, the registrar Star ed the night shift and put her tube back in as her volume intake of milk me was too low. at which point she is still vomiting after every feed.

The next day she vomited a large amount of bright yellow\green vomit only 10mins after a feed. A consultant came on ward round felt her tummy and said her tube can come out and you can go home, much to my surprise! ! She is still having to work hard when she's breathing And is taking more breaths per min as she was when she was admitted.

Unfortunately there was no continuity of care, the registrars know her best but were always overruled. And I still have a poorly baby.. We were never given a reason or treatment for her breathing problems, she was ng fed at 8am and discharged at 10am! !

Dear unhappy mother

What a challenging time you and your baby daughter are going through at the moment.

As this is now a Friday night after 5pm, I want to firstly reiterate that if your daughter is not improving and you are getting more concerned about her health you must call ADOC on 08454 24 24 24 or present to A&E - we do not want you to be going through this time unsupported.

At this moment I do not know the background to your case, as you are anonymous to, so it is therefore difficult for me to take this further in regards to your specific concern.

If you would like to call me on 01292 513607 or email me on kate.macdonald@aapct.scot.nhs.uk, I would be happy to speak with you. (I will be available on Monday from 9.30am).

What I will be doing is passing your posting onto the Health Care Manager who covers Paediatrics at University Crosshouse.

I must stress that you must not hesitate in seeking medical help for your daughter if things change or you need reassurance.

I hope you daughter's health improves.

Kind regards

Kate

Dear unhappy mother

I am wondering how yourself and your baby daughter are doing?

It has been over a month now since your initial posting, you came into my mind and I thought I would post again to see how you are.

Kind regards
