"orthopaedic outpatients appointment"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

l have had problems with my both knees for some time and my left knee was giving me a lot of problems so l was referred to the hospital, whilst waiting for the appointment my right knee started to give the same problems so when l went for my appointment l told the doctor l had problems with both knees, the reply was you are here for your left knee so you will have to get another referral for your right knee before l will look at it. Is this the right way, is this the correct procedure? .

Dear Dylan Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us and I am sorry to hear that you are having difficulties with both your knees. I have taken your concerns to the Orthopaedic General Manager who explained the reasoning behind the doctors’ comment. Before the introduction of the current Clinical Commissioning Group the former Primary Care Trust requested that we treated patients for what they were referred in for and nothing else, in order for them to monitor fully the activity they were sending to the Trust. It should have been possible for the hospital Doctor to assess both your knees and then write to the GP confirming which (if any) needed further intervention and in what order of priority, so that you didn’t have to attend twice and I am sorry this did not happen. The General Manager has assured me she will investigate with the Executive team how they discuss this further with the CCG to minimise inconvenience to patients. If you would like to discuss this further please contact our PALS team on 01202 704886 who will be able to assist you. Thank you once again for your feedback Kind regards Sue Mellor Head of Patient Experience
