"9 hour wait with burst appendix at Doncaster Royal Infirmary"

About: Doncaster Royal Infirmary / General surgery

(as a relative),

We received excellent service from the nurses on the ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, but the amount of time it took to operate on my son was unacceptable.

My 9 year old son was diagnosed with a burst appendix before 7am, yet he did not get into the operating theatre until after 4pm. This means that he had to wait on a ward, in considerable pain, for approximately 9 hours. At one point we were told that he would have to wait further to allow for the operating staff to have lunch! This is abhorrent.

Due to the delay, my son was in hospital for a week until his body recovered, as the burst appendix and its contents were allowed to spread and leak within him for 9 hours.

I would like the reason for this delay to be explained please.
