"Extremely impressed with staff and services"

About: University Hospital (Coventry)

My father recently had a heart bypass and value replacement whilst it took a very long and concerning time to get a date for his operation once my dad was admitted the staff explained everything to him clearly and took time to prepare him for his operation. When my father was taken down to theatre they gave us time scales of when to expect a phone call and this was very accurate. The surgeon called us directly to explain what had happened during the operation, this was nice to hear the info from him in person. He explained that we could go straight to visit and we did. On our arrival the nurse in charge of my dad's care met us before we entered ITU and prepared us of what to expect with all off the machines and wires coming out of dad, this was fantastic as otherwise it would have been a shock. She explained the visiting arrangements and provided us with a telephone number to call for updates over night and made us feel comfortable to call whenever we wanted. The following day we called in the early hours and she had just woke dad up from the sedation and advised us that he will be moving onto HDU. When we arrived on HDU she was caring for Dad that day and again she met us to brief us on how dad was doing prior to entering the ward. We found Dad up drinking tea and looking fantastic. She was great with dad and made him very comfortable and accommodated every request. Dad was uncomfortable in his bed because of a back problem and was moved into a chair to be more comfortable. His progress was fantastic and all of the staff around him were fantastic with him and kept a smile on his face. The following day dad was moved onto the step down ward and again the updates and care was great. My dad was discharged after 6 days and was walking around and climbing stairs by this point. You can tell that the team on ward 11 and ITU and HDU are very passionate about what they do. We alway hear bad reports in the press about hospitals and nursing but our experience was fantastic and we wanted to ensure that the staff get the recognition that they deserve. The communication and updates we were given made the whole process so much easier. Thank you so much to the teams involved with dad's care we really appreciated the fantastic care we all received. And a special thank you for coming to visit dad later on before he left the hospital that meant a lot to him x
