"Traumatic experience"

My mother was admitted to C10 for assessment after deterioration in health. Within 24 hours of admission my mother became very distressed, experiencing auditory hallucinations and psychosis. I arrived for a visit and the staff nurse informed me (and the rest on the patients and visitors in my mums bay) that the mental health team would be visiting my mum,I was mortified and my mum was terrified, I was there for every visit during her 5 day stay on the ward, seeing her becoming progressively worse. After receiving a phone call from the night staff I spent the night in a chair by my mothers bed ( she'd been so distressed) only leaving at 7:30 am. I returned after lunch and again at 16:00hrs. The later visit found my mum sobbing uncontrollably in the chair by her bed. The other patients in the bay spoke to me, informing me that mum was like this all the time and was ignored by staff. On this occasion she had made it onto the corridor, two staff had brought her back to the chair and then left her sobbing. I pressed the buzzer and a healthcare assistant said that she would find a member of staff. 30 minutes later my mum had cried herself into exhaustion and no staff had been to see us. I walked down to the nurses station to find out what was going on and to ask them about safegaurding/vulnerable adults . The final straw was that evening, I had gone with mum when she had a scan. By the time we got back to the ward night shift had started and the same nurse that had called me back to the hospital the night before was on duty. They smiled saying they were pleased that my mum had had a good day. I asked if that had been the report by day staff? They confirmed that it was; at this point I lost all confidence in the ward. I returned the following morning having made the decision to take my mum home. I believe that Although we needed the medical care, the impact on her well being left me little choice. Anyone can be susceptible to mental health issues causes can include infection, dehydration/electrolyte imbalances, desease process and medications, and/or the patient is elderly and terrified. The ward needs to review data protection, duty of care and safeguarding.
