About: Russells Hall Hospital

I attended this department at the end of June 2013. After 3 hours of being shuffled around from seat to seat I enquired how long it would be before I saw the doctor. I was told that I was last but one on the list and that there were three patients before me. Knowing that this could be anything up to another hour and a half, and having suffered I minor stroke recently, I did not feel I could wait any longer and told the nurses I was leaving. The same afternoon the doctor phoned me at home and said he was sorry for the delay, but would like to see me, and would arrange another appointment. Three days later a letter arrived with a new appointment for 4th. September 2013. Four days after this another letter arrived changing the date to 12th March 2014. It appears that , while my need of treatment warranted a phone call from the doctor, but adding 6 months to my rearranged date makes me think that the appointments must be arranged by clerical staff and not medical staff. I know this department is very busy but adding 6 months to appointments is not really acceptable.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experience of our Ophthalmology Department. We are disappointed to hear that you had to wait longer than was comfortable for your appointment. We are also sorry that your new appointment was rearranged We acknowledge that there have been long standing issues relating to the availability of appointments in this department. These have been caused mainly by the increase in patient demand and the difficulty to recruit more staff due to a nationwide shortage of ophthalmology specialists. We are currently advertising for a full-time specialist doctor, and have recruited two additional clinicians on a temporary basis to help us in the interim. We hope that this recruitment will help us to provide a more timely and smooth running service for our patients. A member of the Ophthalmology team will be in touch with you shortly to discuss your appointment.
