"Unprofessional comment"

About: Watford General Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I attended a scan with my best friend in November 2013. She was scanned by a consultant and when she asked to find out the sex, he replied ok it's a fanny.

I found this so unprofessional. It was a disgrace. Just saying male or female would have been fine.

She had her first baby 16 months ago and I also was present. The wards I saw were a disgrace and I saw some dirty beds. She went home with a cannula left in her arm which I had to remove.

I am currently pregnant and will not be going there. I had my first baby at Royal Free and had a full body massage in labour. Great staff, bubble bath after, nice food, treated like royalty.

Thank you for taking the time to let us have feedback about your friend's experience at Watford Hospital.

I am of course concerned to hear about the comment made by our consultant and your concerns about cleanliness on the ward.

I have brought your concerns to the attention of our Head of Midwifery and would ask you or your friend to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) so that we can investigate this further. Knowing your friend's name would help us to identity who scanned her so that we could raise your concerns with him.

I would like to reassure you that we have made significant changes to the way we clean our wards over recent months and our matrons perform regular spot checks to ensure we are meeting the highest possible standards.

I hope you or your friend will contact us so that we can address the concerns you raised. Our PALS team can be emailed on pals@whht.nhs.uk or called on 01923 217 198.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of help. My email is antony.tiernan@whht.nhs.uk or you can tweet me: @AntonyTiernan. Alternatively, feel free to call me on 01923 436 229.
