"Compassionate A&E GP and nurse"

About: The Whittington Hospital

Anything else?

My boyfriend and I attended A&E at 10am Saturday morning for suspected appendicitis. It ws very busy being New Years Day however he was seen after two hours, and once the GP had triaged him and he moved through to the ward he was treated promptly, with great respect and very compassionate nurses. Due to infection control he was put in a side room, which was very clean and comfortable with ensuite bathroom. As his fasting period ended after dinner time was finished the kind nurses went out of their way to get him food as he was starving after 24hours of nothing. My recommendation would be that I had to prompt the nurses four times before they remembered to administer the codine that he was written up for so a bit better communication would be good - although there were three verbally abusive people still drunk from New Years Eve yelling at staff so I assume that this is a rare situation. Also, the waiting chairs in the A&E and hugely uncomfortable to sit in for hours at a time, particularly when someone is so ill. This really needs review as my boyfriend sat on the floormultiple times as it was more comfortable!

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with us. It is great to know that your boyfriend received prompt, respectful and compassionate care in a very clean environment. This is the kind of treatment we aim to provide to all our patients. The nurses going the extra mile to ensure your boyfriend ate is also encouraging. Thank you for your suggestions that the chairs be reviewed. The ED department have been made aware of your feedback and will look into how this can be resolved. We have also shared with the ED department your comments regarding better communication and we appreciate that during periods where you are unwell or with family/friends that are unwell, good and timely communication is paramount.
