"24th December am"

About: Watford General Hospital

Anything else?

I accompanied my son to A&Eduring the early hours of Christmas Eve. I found the experience very worrying. The department was not busy - at 1am there were 3 people waiting, at 2am 5 people. Despite the fact that my son was the 2nd arrival he was not seen until 4.30 and I believe this occurred only because I queried how much longer we would have to wait. One of the others waiting was a male in a wheelchair who shouted for assistance to go to the toilet - this was totally ignored and my son had to assist him though bleeding and fleeing faint as a result of his injury. It was 4 am before my son was seen by a medic, a female who appeared to be the only one assigned to the department. Once seen the medical staff were considerate and professional although the nurse having to search for equipment to glue and tape an injury in an A&E department seems odd. I am an avid supporter of the NHS but the experience in the A&E waiting room was akin to what I have seen in countries without health funding and if judged by how we treat our most vulnerable then this A&E is definitely failing. As stated, the medical treatment was good but something is seriously wrong with the admin/organistion of this service.
