"4yr old left 4 hours in a&e + shouted at by nurse..."

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

Anything else?

I attended A and E yesterday with my 4 year old daughter who had been extremely ill for the past 48 hours. We waited patiently for nearly 4 hours (waiting time was 3 hours), after my daughters condition worsening and pleading for help at the desk, I was told to go to the trolley area and ask to be seen quicker with my bowl of bile and blood in hand, I approached the nurses station and pleaded for help for the sister to address me with attitude and glares to inform me I had only been waiting 2 hours (not the case and verified by triage and reception) and that I should go sit down and someone will see my daughter, but other people needed there help? Sorry but I'm not one to run to A+E or the docs with a sick child but this was different, as she increasingly raised her voice, I turned and left to go back to waiting room to be shouted yes shouted at that people were dying there! Well yes i appreciate this and I'm sure they appreciated her shouting as did my 4 year old not. I would like to point out she knew nothing about my daughter and in fact did not know what was wrong with her, she did not know her medical history, and could not make a clinical judgement and at no point did I raise my voice. Beyond angry especially as my daughter was in fact admitted to hospital! Will I take my child here again absolutely not, hospitals are full of sick and dying people this is not what you want when you go to a place for help. The nurses/ doctors who later cared for my daughter I can not fault, such a shame one person's inappropriate behaviour out weighs it all.

I am so sorry to hear that you had such a distressing in the emergency department. The behaviour you describe is not in any way acceptable and I would like to address this with the individual. In order to pin point who exactly this was, I welcome you to contact me on the number below so we can take more details from you such as the date you came in etc. I expect staff to treat all patients with respect and dignity at all times, no matter how under pressure the department may be. Once again I can only apologise for the way in which you have described you were treated, and I would very much like to get to the bottom of this. I am however glad that you were pleased with the care given by doctors and nurses later on in your daughters stay and I hope she is now on her way to recovery.
