"Disappointed that birthing pool is still closed"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

Went for a ward tour today at Lincoln County Maternity, staff were very helpful and gave some good info across.

Whilst I appreciate that work is ongoing to upgrade the facilities and there may well have been improvements so far both my husband and I found Nettleham ward to be in a need of a revamp, a simple redecoration would greatly improve it.

Was nicely surprised when we went to the Labour ward, the rooms look much nicer. We are however extremely disappointed that the Birthing Pool still isn't open despite there being an official response on this site that stated would be open in October 2013.

The reason we were given today was that the Emergency Pull Cord doesn't work.......it fathoms believe that many women who may be asking for a water birth can't have one because of a pull cord. The room the pool is in looks great though it's just a shame it looks like I won't be able to have the birth I so badly want over something that will now probably be sitting with a maintenance dept for months on end.

We know it is disappointing for the women that we have not been able to open the pool room before now but clinical safety is paramount. Unfortunately the emergency buzzer equipment had to be ordered as a special piece of equipment due to the fact that it has to work in conjunction with the rest of the buzzer equipment and it is no longer available as a standard.

On the plus side the room is now fully finished and will officially open on Monday 27th Jan.

We agree that Nettleham ward is ready for a refurbishment and the Trust is actively planning a refurbishment of the entire maternity block over the next three years.
