My father recently collapsed with a massive brain haemorrhage and was admitted to Ward F8 at the General. He already suffered from terminal cancer, and the doctor showed us his CT scan and explained to us that half his brain was involved and he was unlikely to recover, although sometimes people did improve. In view of his condition and cancer, and with full discussion with the staff, we decided he should go on a care pathway to ease his passing. This was made easier by the fact that he had already discussed this with his GP and completed the relevant paperwork making his wishes known. During the following week, the staff couldn't have been more professional and caring. They ensured my father was kept clean, shaved and comfortable and his bed linen was changed numerous times during the day. My family and I cannot praise the care he received enough and he died pain free and with dignity, which is all we can hope for.
