"Worried about staffing levels on children's ward"

About: North Manchester General Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My baby was admitted for 2 nights after catching bronchiolitis this month. It was a scary and exhausting experience. Night nurses were friendly but seemed too busy. I heard one say that each nurse would have to take 8 patients. My son was given nebulizers every hour which seemed to make him grumpy and didn't appear to help his breathing. I subsequently read about bronchiolitis treatment on the internet. Apparently nebulizers are not even considered effective for bronchiolitis so it feels like we both lost all that sleep for no reason. I also read on the RCN site that nurses on children's wards should each have a maximum of 5 patients. My understanding is that 8 or 9 may be considered dangerous. I was exhausted but in the circumstances I believed if I left, my son may not have been looked after properly.
