I had an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy on 11th October and returned for a follow up Investigation on 11th December. The information sent to me in advance was clear and there was a number to discuss any further queries I had with a nurse. She was helpful and reassuring. On the first visit, although the department was very busy, I was welcomed and asked to wait but I had the impression that it was running very efficiently. The white board gave information about who the endoscopists were and how long the wait would be. I was shown into a private room where the procedure was explained to me and I had an opportunity to ask any further questions before giving my consent. She was friendly and reassuring and I did not feel rushed. I was treated throughout the procedure with dignity and respect and the staff did their best to make me feel at ease even though I found the procedure very uncomfortable. On the second visit, I was treated with the same level of respect and, even though I felt very anxious, I was treated with care and compassion which helped to allay my anxiety. I cannot speak too highly of the department and the treatment I received. If this is typical then the RUH is an excellent hospital which we should be proud of.
