Firstly let me comment on CQC review. The faults listed in this review bore little contact with reality! My wife was a patient at the RUH during the time of this CQC visit (Feb 2013) and quite honestly we didn't recognise the hospital from what was described in their report. For example it was claimed that a patient had gone from early morning to lunchtime without a drink. Rubbish! It simply could not happen! In short these 'official' reviews if not written sensitively can cause much anxiety amongst prospective patients and their families. The reviewers would be well advised to bear such things in mind! I've spent a great deal of time at the RUH over the last13/14 months during the time my wife was receiving care for her cancer, not just for a few days. There is no reason for anyone to worry about what sort of care they will receive at this hospital. Of course mistakes can be made and attitudes of individual staff may not always be to your liking, but believe me, any occurrence of such things are rare, very rare. Oncology Unit: For any woman told that she probably has a cancer, rest assured that you will receive excellent treatment at the RUH. For the whole Oncology unit is staffed by a group of fantastic consultants doctors and nurses, right on down to the most junior auxiliary staff. Oncology is a place that exudes the most wonderful atmosphere of hope and encouragement. It has to be seen and/or experienced to be fully understood. The Chemo suite is an amazingly happy place with wonderful nurses who go out of their way to make their patients feel positive! When my wife had some bad reactions to the initial Chemo treatments her consultant fought for and obtained a new chemo drug that was not yet normally available on the NHS. In short they go out of their way to get what's best for the patient! Breast Care Clinic: Staffed by dedicated men and women this is another fantastic part of the RUH. The patient is fully supported through what is a most difficult period in their lives - initial diagnosis. Once diagnosed the relevant departments involved in your treatment will work together to produce the best possible results! Care/support in this uni6t after surgery is again second to none. Admission Suit and Theatre staff: On admission your care is excellent, and any anxieties you may have are not treated with anything but real compassion. The anaesthetists and your surgeon will likewise go out of their way to put you at your ease, and explain fully whenever you ask a question. I was even allowed to go right to the door of the theatre before having to leave my wife. Philip Yeoman Ward: Any superlatives I might use about this ward would not do it justice. The staff are exemplary. A&E/MAU Our visits there, at all times of the day and night found the same excellent support as in other depts.
