What I liked

I have a close relative that has this evening been moved to a ward from Intensive Care, I cannot fault the intensive care team and the intensive care unit. The works being completed around the hospital are very intrusive and the builders should be warned that outside of intensive care there could be people at a very emotional stage, not knowing what could happen to relatives within the unit.

What could be improved

I am very upset, my relative has been moved from intensive care to a ward this evening. This is a very frightening time for the patient who feels very disorientated, we had no official handover with staff, a male nurse appeared in the ward, two family members were with the patient trying to ensure that they settled, the nurse did not introduce himself. When the family left a telephone number was requested from the nurse, we said that the patient was distressed at being moved and frightened at being in a different ward to which he said 'he had worked there for 20 years not 2 years as per her previous intensive care nurse that had bought her to the ward, she would have a good night as did all his patients and that we could attend from 11 am the next morning.' There was no introduction no caring and he was very brusque. It came as a shock to us to have this after the excellent care that the patient had in intensive care, it did not matter how long the male nurse had worked there, it did not give us much hope of care when he could not deal with the basic introduction of himself, I hope that things continue to be good for our relative, we are very worried now about leaving the hospital and the care that will be received, I suppose only time will tell, but perhaps a course in basic introductions and care and understanding of a patients move to a ward from icu would be good! The confidence rating above applies to the ward treatment not icu.
