About: Colchester General Hospital

Anything else?

I was taken to A&E last Easter when I had fallen and hurt my back, I fell with such force I could only take shallow breathes, the ambulance staff were amazing and was taken straight to Colchester hospital, I was given gas and air, anyway after a quick check over and an X-ray and left in a corridor for ages a nurse/doctor came over to me and said I could sit up, the xray showed nothing id probably just hurt my ribs and to take it easy for a while, but I was allowed home, i sat up and thought i was going to pass out, i was very shaky, so I had to jump off a rather high trolley, call a taxi and went home from north station train station in Colchester back home, luckily I had someone give me a lift from Kirby back to my house, I was so ill, I couldn't move, I kept feeling faint, had a bad night, had no painkillers given me so I was using over the counter medication, two evenings later I had a random call from the hospital to say they had actually found a fracture I needed to go back in the morning and see a specialist. where confirmed a fracture in my spine, 4-6 weeks later I had an mir scan that found a second fracture. fractures had gone un noticed. I had a very small amount of physio which to be honest was pathetic, about 6 visits in all, with just heat pads on my back, no strengthening help whatsoever. well I never complained but now I have seen so many people speak up I felt I had to do the same, maybe it will prevent another mistake like this, though I doubt it. I was 46 years old when this happened.

I apologise you’ve not had a good patient experience. We try really hard to improve our services based on the comments we receive from our patients, their relatives or carers. We would like the opportunity to discuss your experiences more fully and to apologise in person. If you are willing I would appreciate it if I could ask the matron to contact you. Could you email me, using the reference “Accident and emergency services at RDEE4-Colchester General Hospital at 02/12/2013 11:17:52”, please? Many thanks Paul Searle, Head of Communications Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust info@colchesterhospital.nhs.uk
