"Grateful to sonographer for diagnosing our babies heart defect"

About: Birmingham Women's Hospital / Maternity care George Eliot Hospital - Acute Services / Maternity Glenfield Hospital / Paediatric cardiology

(as the patient),

After receiving fantastic care with our first child in 2011 we naturally booked to have our second child (due may 2013) at the George Eliot hospital.

On new years eve we were excited to attend our 20 week scan. We were told our baby had transposition of the great arteries, meaning the arteries to the heart were the wrong way round. This is an often missed congenital heart defect. We are so grateful to the sonographer for diagnosing it as it meant our baby would receive specialist care as soon as he was born.

The antenatal staff insured that we were seen at Birmingham women's for a confirmed diagnosis within days (bearing in mind this all happened over new year)

As our baby required to be transferred to a specialist heart unit and needed to be born in a high risk unit we transferred our care to Leicester royal infirmary, however I was still able to have my antenatal care and regular growth scans at the George Eliot.

Our baby was born and spent 4 weeks in Glenfield hospital and is now fine. But if it wasn't for an antenatal diagnosis and such a good team at the George Eliot you never know what would have happened

I would defiantly choose the George Eliot if I were to have another baby.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We are all really pleased to learn that your baby was able to receive immediate care because of the sonographr's interpretation of your scan. Your comments will be forwarded to the maternity manager to share with staff.

Please accept our good wishes for the continuing good health of your baby.
