"Mixed experiences with knee pain"

About: Chesterfield Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I have a knee problem and was referred to the hospital for an x-ray which was carried out with care and compassion.

The lady who x-rayed my knee was very concerned about the obvious pain I was in and after the x-ray she insisted I go to A&E for the results to be examined and that I needed a wheelchair as she suspected that something may be loose in my knee.

She fetched a wheelchair and wheeled me through to A&E herself, she then got me booked into A&E.

Up to that point the service could not be faulted. However when I eventually got to see the doctor on call I experienced a whole different attitude. He asked me why I thought it necessary to visit HIS department on this occasion and I explained that the lady in x-ray had thought I should, but his attitude was terrible. He more or less discounted his colleague's professional opinion and dismissed my pain as moderate arthritis and that was the end of that!

So x-ray staff's opinion counted for naught, and I was sent on my not so merry way. I was stunned at his attitude and his total lack of concern.
