"Thank you to all the staff at Opthalmic Day Care at Maidstone General Hospital"

About: The Maidstone Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as a relative),

I took my 84 year old mum to have her cataract removed at the Eye Day Ward. She was treated with respect and dignity throughout. The nursing staff and administration staff were helpful and friendly who could not do enough for my mum and all of the other patients I saw that day, the majority of which were elderly.

She is looking forward to going back and having the second eye done! Thanks for the kindness shown to her that day.

This experience has restored some of my faith in the care given to elderly people in hospitals today. It can be done and there are great examples of good standards of professional practice. We must speak up for our vulnerable elderly population and ensure bad cultures and attitudes are not allowed to continue to go unnoticed or unchallenged in our health services.

Thank you for your comments on services in your area. NHS West Kent, your Primary Care Trust has set up an initiative, The Health Network to let you have more say in how services are provided locally. Becoming a member means you can learn about the Primary Care Trust and the wider NHS, share and discuss your experiences of healthcare, give suggestions for improving services and have a chance to debate local issues about patient and public involvement. The Health Network gives members the opportunity to join review groups which comment on PCT strategies, policies and literature or simply sign up for information updates. Members can put in as little or as much time as they like; and may have the opportunity to work with doctors, nurses, therapists and planners in the early stages of planning new services and in fields in which they have a particular interest. For further information, please visit our website, or contact Emma Cain, Public Liaison Officer on 01732 375287, or email: emma.cain@wkpct.nhs.uk
