"Be persistant"

About: Doncaster PCT Doncaster Royal Infirmary / Cardiology Northern General Hospital / Cardiology Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust

(as a relative),

My daughter started to have palpitations and other odd occurances last year. This eventually resulted in her collapsing at home and being taken by ambulance to DRI. The paramedic had detected something he did not like but the A & E Dr said she was too young to have a heart problem (she was 20) and he sent her home and advised us to see the GP the next day. At the GP's upon exam a missed beat was detected but the GP felt her symptoms may be stress and/or age related. However, I knew there was something wrong, mother's often do and so he referred her to the DRI to see a cardiologist. The cardiologist was of the same opinion as the GP but I was insistent so he said he would do tests, a 24 hour ECG and a heart scan, but he said he believed he could write the report straight away as he was convinced everything would be normal. I was not so convinced! The heart scan was normal but the ECG was not, it showed she has a heart condition and she was referred to specialists at the Northern General in Sheffield. We had a long wait but were eventually seen by a wonderful surgeon who has said she needs surgery there is no alternative. We were told the waiting list should be three months but was likely to be longer ... I only wish we could afford private health care as the fear we live with on a daily basis is horrendous.
