"Emergency admission to hospital and delays"

Severely debilitated elderly lady with severe abdominal pain receiving chemotherapy, called GP at 3. 30 pm. Was seen by GP at home this afternoon. GP spoke to specialist who advised admission to hospital - this was at 4. 45 pm. Ambulance called by GP to take patient to hospital at 5. 10 pm and letter to hospital written by GP to accompany patient. Ambulance arrived about 8 pm to take the lady to hospital. She was taken to A&E and seen by a junior doctor who was completely unfamiliar with the chemotherapy treatment, As I write this it is now 11. 15 pm and the lady is still waiting to see a registrar in A&E.

Why does this poor lady in severe pain and needing need to go to A&E and wait more than 6 hours from being seen by her GP, to be not even been admitted to hospital despite her consultant telling the GP she needs admission? A&E completely inflexible and unresponsive to the situation. It is near impossible to be seen by the right specialist in a timely manner.
