"Relatives treated unfairly"

About: Heavitree Hospital

Anything else?

My husband was admitted to the day case unit today for a minor operation. There was no warning on the letter he received about the facilities for relatives. We have been to the day case unit in the past and had no trouble. Today only when we were shown to the waiting room were we informed that once each patient had gone through fro their operation relatives would have to wait until 90 minutes after the operation was completed before being allowed to see their loved one. Apparently upon converting the theatre to a day case one, they didn't allow for relatives and keep patients in recovery until they are able to leave. I was upset at not being allowed to see my husband for two hours and the Matron took it upon herself to take me to task over my attitude whilst continuing to reiterate their rules as if I hadn't understood them. I thought the modern NHS understood that relatives are important to patient happiness and well being but this is clearly not the case. Also if we had received advance warning that I couldn't see my husband I could have made other arrangements. As it is we had to make immensely complex plans for the care of our severely disabled daughter which we needn't have worried about if we had known.
