"Occupational Therapy after knee replacement surgery"

About: Western Infirmary/Gartnavel General / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My mother in law had knee replacement surgery at Gartnavel Hospital, Glasgow.

Inpatient stay great, got on well with occupational therapist Alan, who confirmed she was ready for discharge - could get in and out of bed.

On arriving home, she could not get in and out of bed (no aids were given on discharge) and barely slept for 2 nights in a chair. I phoned the ward and spoke to Alan who was great and came to do a home visit to assist my mother - not usual practice.

He then arranged for 2 aids (strap and bar) to help her in and out of bed. He followed this up with phone calls and encouragement.

Excellent service!

Concerned now though that she does not get enough follow up to encourage exercise and onward recovery.
